He was born in the prison house of Demon Kamsa as the son of Mother Devaki and Vasudeva. After His transferal to the Gokul He appeared to be born of Mother Yashoda. At that time Vasudeva was imprisoned and was unable to observe this festival, however Nanda Maharaj organised a great festival, Nanda Utsav to celebrate this occurrence. The Nandotsava is observed in commemoration of the festival of birth of Lord Sri Krishna which was originally organized by Nanda Maharaj.

Sukadeva Goswami explains the jubilance of Nanda Maharaj on this occasion in Srimad Bhagavatam. He mentions that Maharaj Nanda was very magnanimous personality by nature and when Lord Sri Krishna appeared as his son his joy enhanced overwhelmingly. Now, to celebrate the day he bathed and purified himself, dressed properly and invited brahmanas who knew how to recite Vedic Mantras perfectly. These qualifies brahmanas chanted the Vedic Hymns and then there was celebration of Vedic Birth Ceremony for newborn child performed according to the rules and regulations mentioned in scriptures. Nanda Maharaj also arranged to worship demigods and forefathers on this sacred occasion.

Celebrations of this festival at Gupt Vrindavan Dham is enhanced by the simultaneous occurrence of the appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of ISKCON and Worldwide Hare Krishna Movement.
