Why Rath Yatra Matters
Rath Yatra is a festival of three chariots, carrying Lord Jagannath along with Lord Balaram and Devi Subhadra through the streets of Puri. Celebrated for over two thousand years, it remains one of the largest gatherings of devotion in the world. Here is why millions travel to Puri every year, and how the festival unfolds day by day.
Rath Yatra 2026 Full Schedule
Snana Yatra falls on Monday, June 29, 2026, the full moon of Jyeshtha month. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Devi Subhadra are given a grand ceremonial bath with over a hundred pots of sacred water. After this, the deities rest during a period called Anasara, when public darshan is restricted.
Gundicha Marjan falls on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, one day before the main Rath Yatra. Devotees clean and prepare the Gundicha Temple, the deities' aunt's home, ahead of their arrival, an act of seva considered deeply meritorious.
Rath Yatra, the main chariot procession, takes place on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The three chariots, Nandighosha, Taladhwaja and Darpadalana, carry the deities from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple along Bada Danda, the Grand Road of Puri. Before the procession begins, the King of Puri performs Chhera Pahara, sweeping the chariot platforms with a golden broom as a gesture of humility before the Lord.
Hera Panchami falls on Monday, July 20, 2026, the fourth day after Rath Yatra, when Goddess Lakshmi is said to visit the Gundicha Temple in search of Lord Jagannath.
The deities remain at the Gundicha Temple from July 16 to July 23, 2026, receiving worship in a more intimate setting than the main sanctum.
Bahuda Yatra, the return journey, takes place on Friday, July 24, 2026, nine days after the main Rath Yatra. The same three chariots carry the deities back to the Jagannath Temple, pausing along the way at the Mausi Maa Temple for an offering of Poda Pitha.
Suna Besha falls on Saturday, July 25, 2026, one day after Bahuda Yatra. This is one of the most visually striking moments of the festival, when the deities are adorned with gold ornaments while still seated on their chariots.
Adhara Pana falls on Sunday, July 26, 2026, a sweetened drink of curd, milk and spices offered to the deities atop the chariots.
Niladri Bije falls on Monday, July 27, 2026, marking the conclusion of the festival, as the deities make their final return into the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple, completing the sacred cycle for the year.
