Vijaya Ekadashi and Lord Rama

The significance of this Ekadashi is described in the Vedic Puranas through a conversation between Lord Rama and the deity of the ocean, Samudra Deva.

When Lord Rama wanted to cross the ocean with His mighty army of Vanaras (monkeys) to rescue Mother Sita and defeat the demon king Ravana, He first humbly requested Samudra Deva to grant them a path through the ocean. However, Samudra Deva refused. This made Lord Rama transcendently angry, and in fear of being completely dried up, Samudra Deva appeared before Lord Rama, surrendered at His lotus feet, and begged for forgiveness.

The merciful Lord Rama forgave Samudra Deva, and after this incident, His army built a bridge of floating stones across the ocean. Amazingly, the stones did not sink but floated on water. Even today, scientific discoveries confirm the existence of this ancient bridge between India and Lanka over the Indian Ocean.

That is why, on this auspicious day, we should serve Lord Rama by offering donations in His service. Just as He mercifully forgave Samudra Deva, we too should seek His blessings by contributing to spiritual causes. Donating on Ekadashi brings immense spiritual benefits and helps in spreading Lord Rama’s divine mission.

Lord Krishna also narrates a story about a woman who was devoted but lacked generosity in offering food. This story highlights the importance of giving and the merit one gains by observing Sat-tila Ekadashi.

How to Observe Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat

On this day, devotees should fast, worship the Supreme Lord, and offer prayers, and also perform a fire sacrifice, or homa, with sesame seeds.

Conclusion

Vijaya Ekadashi is a reminder of the importance of compassion, selflessness, and spiritual growth. By choosing to donate on this day, individuals not only make a huge difference in the lives of others but also progress on their spiritual journey.
